Downloading and installing the DivX video codec

What is DivX and why am I here?

You may be viewing this page because you require the DivX video codec in order to load your DivX compressed AVI video file or you may wish to render high quality video files and still obtain low file sizes.

In either case I strongly recommend installing the freely available "DivX video codec".

DivX Video Codec FREE (for personal use)

From the DivX website :
"DivX® software may be used for personal use at no cost. You heard us. That's free, as in zilch. As long as you are using the codec for personal use, then you can use it with our blessing without paying us a single dollar, peso, yen, lira, deutschmark, franc, or guilder or euro. Go crazy.

DivX Pro™ software may be used for personal use by purchasing a personal use license. Alternately, an ad-supported version of DivX Pro software is provided at no cost for personal use."

Click here to download the DivX Video Codec (version 5.1 now available).

You should see the following pop-up in your browser. The easiest way is to click "Open" to open the file directly, but if you wish to save the installation file on your computer permantently then you can also "Save" to your computer and open after you have saved it.

When you "Open" it, you should see the following welcome screen.
Click "Next >" to continue.

You should now see the following screen. Read the text and warnings, then click "Next >" to continue.

The "Software License Agreement" is now displayed which you need to click "Yes" to agree to and continue.

Choose your location for installation. You can leave the suggested location if you do not have any particular reason for choosing a different location.
Click "Next >" to continue.

In the following screen you will see two checkboxes "DivX Codec 5.0.2" and "DivX Player 2.0 Alpha 5". They will both be ticked when you enter this screen for the first time. If you are only installing this software in order to use the DivX video codec with FadeToBlack, and you do not wish to install the additional DivX Player, then un-tick the "DivX Player 2.0 Alpha 5" checkbox.
Click "Next >" to continue.

The following screen tells you that the DivX codec is about to be installed. Click "Next >" to continue.

You will see the installation progress and then see the following screen.
Installation should now be complete, so you can click "Close" to close this installation program.

Once the DivX video codec is installed you need to re-open FadeToBlack.

On the "Save AVI" screen on the left of "Video Compression" select "Advanced" (not "None" or "Basic").

Then from the "Video Codec" drop-down list you need to select "DivX Codec (version)" (will probably be already selected).

Then when you click "Render" your AVI will hopefully be compressed to a smaller file and with good quality.
